School Based Health Centers

Getting health care for your child can be complicated. Many doctors can only see patients during the school day, and their offices might be far from school. To see the doctor, your child might have to miss school and you might have to leave work — which isn't always an option.

When students aren't feeling well, they have a harder time learning. They may miss class a lot — and when they are in class, they might have trouble paying attention. Giving kids and teens access to health care at school puts them in a better position to learn.

Tug River Health School Based Health Centers at Mount View and River View High Schools provide healthcare services to help you and your family stay healthy and active in school.

Our Certified Nurse Practitioners, Julia Blevins (River View) and Amy West (Mount View) will work with you and your child to ensure they receive quality healthcare in a timely manner so you and your child’s schedule is not disrupted. Enrollment in our School Based Health Center allows your child access to:

·      Ill Visits

·      Follow-up visits

·      Vaccines

·      Medication refills

·      Well Exams

·      Dental (coming soon)

A tele-health program to provide access to students outside the High Schools is being planned in early 2025.

You will be included in all aspects of your child’s healthcare without leaving your home or office.

Students who use school-based health centers benefit in many ways. They spend more time in class because they tend to be sick less often and don't have to take as much time off school to get to care visits. According to data from the School-Based Health Alliance, school-based health centers:

  • help students do better in school
  • increase high school graduation rates
  • decrease school discipline cases

Studies show that teens, who might resist going to a doctor, are more willing to get help for problems like depressionanxiety, and weight issues at a school-based health center. This might be because they see the health center's staff at school each day, which helps build trust.

The Tug River School Based Health Centers are open to the public with appointments and walk-ins available. However, priority is given to students and faculty to accommodate scheduling.
